Earthseed Assignment
In my Earthseed community, we are seeking shelter from the severe effects of climate change that have resulted in the Earth’s rising sea levels, such as the melting of glaciers and sea ice in our sunken homeland. Additionally, the persecution of women scientists has led to the issue of unaddressed climate change, by severely discrediting their knowledge and influencing society to never listen to them. These outlined reasons have caused our Earthseed community to take a major risk and flee our homeland in order to construct a better life for ourselves.
“All that you touch, You Change. All that you Change, Changes you. The only lasting truth Is Change. God is Change.”
My Earthseed will implement this powerful verse from Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower by remaining open and adaptive to any changes we may face in our lifelong journey to survive. With survival and bettering our lives comes maintaining a sense of gratitude to still be present on this Earth, even if it isn't always perfect or kind to us. For us, the concept of God extends beyond faith in divine power and into faith in our divine selves and whatever that may look like.
“We do not worship God. We perceive and attend to God. We learn from God. With forethought and work, We shape God. In the end, we yield to God. We adapt and endure, For we are Earthseed. And God is Change.”
God is within us all and we each harness the power to receive changes in our lives and act upon them with strength, certainty, trust, and gratitude. God is change and the power of our individual will to move through these changes, construct change, and be the change we wish to see. God is the manipulation of change which doesn't have to be perceived as a negative thing because no matter how difficult changes can be, accepting them and using God’s change as the power within gives us the faith we need to keep going.
The destination of my Earthseed will be on a remote island, thousands of miles away from any mainland. Our team of strong, female-identifying scientists has spent years understanding the ocean and best understand where we need to settle to survive.
My Earthseed is open to anyone perceptive to change and science. Authentically open-minded and accepting people are key to building the community strength my Earthseed will need to survive. We would reject any closed-minded, bigoted, or performative individuals because they naturally wouldn't survive due to their severe weakness caused by intolerance.
My leadership model will be fluid and communal—as placing the responsibility of leadership in the hands of one individual or a small group of people causes severe stress and missed opportunities to innovate. We will all be perceptive to sharing ideas and challenging the leaders within us in order to help one another survive.
A future technology we will utilize is advanced, solar-powered boats and ships in order to navigate through the changing ocean. These innovative boats have the ability to transform into submarines when needed and store years of power reserves so they are practically indestructible and can withstand any weather.
My Earthseed will construct a better future through education and sustainable practices. Education will include in-depth scientific knowledge passed to community members of all ages. Sustainable, conservation practices will involve harnessing the power of each community member to innovate paths to restoring our earth on an individual level—which will translate into major, positive changes over time with patience.
